The design team walked along the island's rocky beaches with the clients, seeking ways to translate this outdoor tactile experience into the interior design. Visitors enter through a thoughtfully designed oak door with a pebble-shaped handle, leading into a low, gently lit, oak-lined entryway. The space gradually opens as the floors terrace down, the ceiling height grows, and the material palette lightens, revealing the main living space. At the heart of the home, the kitchen—complete with a pantry, bar and breakfast nook—is anchored by a fieldstone island evoking the feel of casual gatherings that often take place on the island's rocky shores. Extending from the kitchen is the dining area positioned under a skylight, followed by a lounge space with a built-in sofa bounded by a fieldstone hearth. The design of May Day Cafe began with a clear concept: creating a space that could "embrace the sky." The architects were inspired by a towering cedar tree named "Owol-i" (May) at the center of the site, whose form—branching skyward from a single trunk into two arms—directly influenced the cafe's twin-building configuration. The architects positioned Building A to house the kitchen and staff areas, while Building B opens panoramically through floor-to-ceiling windows on all four sides, offering unobstructed views of the mountain ridgeline. The core highlight of the project is its sensitive response to the site's disrupted topography from development. To conceal the incongruous retaining walls created by construction, Building A was strategically arranged as a screen, while Building B, positioned at the village's highest point, maximizes connection with the natural landscape. Commissioned for two families seeking a weekend escape from urban life, the architects demolished an existing structure to erect this striking new residence. Central to the concept is the integration of nature into the living spaces, drawing inspiration from classical courtyard houses. Multiple internal courtyards and skylights filter in natural light, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor. The elongated main volume dramatically cantilevers over 21 meters towards an adjacent orchard, creating expansive sheltered zones that expand the living areas. While adhering to local rural building codes with prescribed heights and a sloping tiled roof, the bold modern form makes an architectural statement.
